Everything is different now. No more taking the kids out trick or treating while the parents drink from liquor stashed in a wagon. This was our standard since my first born started walking. Some were fun times and some I don’t remember much about at all.
Tonight, kids two and three will be out with friends in neighboring areas. They are so very excited. This is a first for both of them. Even last year, my first sober Halloween, we still went with our usual group in the usual neighborhood. I was just the only adult not drinking out of the wagon cooler.
My oldest, the feisty teen girl, asked if her friends could come here and watch scary movies. Yes, yes, yes!!! I love that they want to be here and I love being able to get to know her friends. I am not taking this gift for granted.
Sobriety can be lonely at times. Actually, it’s been lonely a lot of the time. Fortunately, it is also the best choice I ever made. Grateful is the word of the day.
